Lithuania overseas safety information (January to March)

April 15, 2025, 3:45 p.m.
1. Social and security situation The number of crimes in 2024 was 47,126, of which 1,194 were committed by foreigners. Compared to 2023, the number of crimes increased by 1,945, and the number of foreign victims increased by 46, indicating that the number of crimes in the country is increasing and that the number of foreign victims is also increasing. Most of the crimes committed by foreigners are thefts.

2. Trends in general and violent crimes According to crime statistics released by the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the fourth quarter of 2024 (January to March), the total number of cases was 11,518 (down 6.8% from the same period last year).
On the other hand, the number of foreign victims was 334, an increase of 30.5% from the same period last year.
Additionally, drug crimes increased slightly by 1.1% compared to the same period last year.
Regarding drug cases, cannabis, stimulants, psychotropic drugs, and many other illegal drugs tend to be traded at night at nightclubs and other restaurants. In addition, online trading is also active, and the method of smuggling drugs by diluting them and using them as liquid for electronic cigarettes is becoming mainstream. The authorities are strengthening their countermeasures, and there have been a series of crackdowns across the country.
Please be careful not to get caught up in unexpected situations by carelessly becoming close to strangers, exchanging contact information, or browsing or using suspicious sites (SNS).
The most common crime that foreigners fall victim to is theft. Theft occurs in crowded places such as restaurants, shopping centers, tourist attractions, and train stations.
Lithuania is said to be a safe country, but crimes occur every day, so you should never let your guard down and always keep an eye on your belongings.
Furthermore, various incidents involving alcohol (murder, robbery, injury, theft, drugs, traffic accidents, rip-offs at nightclubs, and other types of trouble) are occurring every day, not just among foreigners. In order to avoid becoming involved in alcohol-related harm or trouble, please be mindful of drinking in moderation and not overdo it.
Please refer to the Embassy's website below for information on types of crime, the number of crimes committed in major cities, and the number of foreign victims.

3. Past crime cases (1) There have been pickpocketing incidents targeting Japanese tourists in the city of Vilnius and in the tourist destination of Siauliai.
A group of three or four men approach Japanese tourists, and while one of them attracts the tourist's attention by behaving in a conspicuous manner in front of the tourist, the others steal valuables from the tourist's backpack or bag. Another method used is to check that the Japanese tourist puts their wallet into the bag after shopping, and then steal the wallet from the bag as they pass by.
You can prevent crime by taking security measures such as storing valuables in places where they are difficult to remove and keeping your distance from suspicious people.
Pickpocketing incidents also occur frequently in crowded areas on holidays and other occasions, so it is important to take the same precautions.
(2) There have been cases of theft targeting Japanese tourists at Vilnius Station and the bus terminal.
This is a common tactic used by thieves to steal your luggage if you take your eyes off it, so please be careful to never take your eyes off your luggage.
