Lithuania overseas safety information (1st quarter) and how to carry your passport safely

July 26, 2024, 4:36 p.m.
1. Update of overseas safety measures information (1st quarter: April to June) The overseas safety measures information (1st quarter) has been updated.
https://www.lt.emb-japan.go.jp/files/100653328.pdf
Compared to the same period last year, there has been an increase in all types of crimes (murder, assault, sexual crimes, theft, robbery and drug offenses).
Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Because of this, there are many cases where people are unaware of the dangers abroad and end up getting involved in unexpected incidents and accidents.
It is important to gather safety information about your destination in advance and always act with the awareness that "it is up to you to protect yourself."

2. Make sure you carry your passport. There have been many cases of people being unable to enter or leave Lithuania, which is within the Schengen area, due to not carrying their passport.
Currently, many European countries have a common policy regarding short-term stays for foreigners, and the Schengen border rules apply to the Schengen area. Within the Schengen area, immigration control is carried out in the first country of entry, and in principle, no immigration control is carried out for subsequent crossings.
However, this does not exempt you from carrying your passport, and just because it hasn't been a problem in the past does not mean it will be okay this time, so please be careful.
In particular, due to the current international situation (such as the problem of illegal immigration), surprise identity checks and screenings are carried out on travelers when crossing borders within the Schengen area, and there have been cases of travelers being denied entry or exit from the country or being detained by authorities because they do not have a passport.
In the first place, foreigners are required to carry identification such as a passport, so please carry it with you at all times regardless of whether you have gone through immigration or not.

3. Proper handling of passports A passport is an international identification document that certifies a person's name, nationality, etc. and is necessary for immigration inspections. At the same time, it is also an official document requesting foreign authorities to "allow the holder of a Japanese passport to travel without hindrance and to provide him or her with the necessary protection and assistance."
(1) Prevention of damage or loss due to commemorative stamps, etc. There have been cases where people have been denied entry or deportation because some of the pages of their passport contain items other than entry/exit stamps and visas (commemorative stamps for visiting tourist spots, notes, point stickers from retail stores, etc.).
There are also cases where a person may be denied entry or exit if a passport has a torn or missing page, or if the passport holder's photograph has been defaced or defaced.
Please be careful not to damage your passport.
(2) Checking immigration stamps, etc. After completing immigration procedures, when you receive your passport, immediately check whether or not there is an immigration stamp, the date, etc. If you later realize that there is no immigration stamp, you will need to go directly to the immigration office where you completed immigration procedures and go through immigration procedures again.
In addition, if you try to leave the country without realizing that you do not have an entry stamp, depending on the circumstances, you may be considered to have entered the country illegally and may be fined or detained by the authorities.
