[Warning] Theft incident against Japanese tourists occurs

May 19, 2025, 4:50 p.m.
Recently, crimes and incidents targeting tourists have been occurring in Tehran. In particular, there has been a series of thefts, such as pickpocketing and snatching. In the past, there have also been cases of robbery and intimidation of passersby, as well as incidents involving public transportation such as taxis and long-distance buses, so caution is advised.
Please also be cautious when dining out or being invited to a home while traveling. Iran has a culture and customs of showing hospitality to guests, but you should be extremely careful about the food and drink offered to you by others.
Please keep in mind the three safety principles of "not conspicuous," "not letting your actions be predicted," and "always remaining vigilant," and take measures to prevent crime while paying attention to the following points.

1. Crime Prevention Measures (1) Pickpockets and Baggage Takers When in crowded places such as airports, train stations, and bazaars, always keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.
Do not carry large amounts of cash, watches, or jewellery with you or show them to others.
C. Avoid conspicuous clothing.
Carry only the bare minimum of valuables such as wallets and passports, and keep them in different places.
Do not leave a pouch or bag containing valuables on your seat in a hotel lobby, restaurant, etc. Do not leave your smartphone or valuables on the table.
Bags must be fastened or buttoned, hung in front of the body or held at the side, and valuables such as wallets must not be placed in the back pockets of pants.
Even if a stranger approaches you, be careful and keep your luggage and valuables close to you.
(2) Hotel A: When going out, store your valuables in the safety deposit box.
When you enter your room, lock it with a key and also use a chain lock.
Even if someone knocks on your door, don't open it easily. Always check who it is. If you notice anything suspicious, contact the front desk to investigate.
(3) While walking a. In public places, try not to use your smartphone as much as possible and avoid leaving it in a situation where it can be seen by others.
When passing or overtaking people, be sure to maintain a certain distance (approximately one arm's length) from other pedestrians.
Avoid moving around with earphones on or using a mobile phone while walking, as these actions can make you less vigilant about your surroundings.
(4) Taking photographs A. Photography is prohibited at airports, train stations, ports, government facilities, military facilities, etc.
Although photography is prohibited, there are many cases where there are no signs or labels prohibiting photography, so please be careful when taking photos, and always check with people around you.
(5) Nighttime A. Avoid going out at night as much as possible. If you have to go out, travel by taxi with multiple people. Also, avoid places with few people.
Be cautious if a stranger approaches you and do not accept food or drinks.

2. Public Transportation (1) When using public transportation, avoid using it at night or early in the morning as much as possible. If you must use public transportation, ride with multiple people whenever possible, do not fall asleep even for a short time, and always pay attention to your surroundings.
(2) When using public transportation, be aware of your surroundings not only while inside the vehicle but also on the platform and at bus stops.
(3) When using a taxi, always check the destination and fare before getting in. Do not use unlicensed taxis. Also, when getting out of the car, check to make sure you have not left anything behind.
(4) When in a taxi, make sure the door is locked and do not open the windows. Be especially careful to keep a close eye on your belongings when other vehicles or motorbikes approach you in an unnatural way.
(5) When traveling on long-distance buses or trains, always keep valuables close to your body and be mindful of the behavior and words of other passengers.

3. If you become a victim (1) If you become a victim, file a report at the nearest police station.
(2) If you are involved in an emergency incident or trouble, do not hesitate to call 110 (police).
(3) If you have any problems, please consult the Japanese Embassy.
