Based on these trends, the infectious disease risk information level is now available after comprehensively considering the actual conditions of each country / region, such as the status of infection, vaccination status, infectious disease control / medical system, and status of various measures in each country / region. Beware of "specialized fraud" exploiting the conflict in the Gaza Strip (Warning)
Jan. 9, 2025, 6:01 p.m.
1. Specific cases recognized through consultations (1) A person who called herself a "Japanese doctor dispatched by the United Nations to Gaza" (female) met through social media, who asked her to remit funds, saying, "I want to return to Japan from Gaza via Egypt, but I don't have the travel expenses." (There was also a case where she was asked to remit funds under the pretext of a package delivery fee, saying, "I want to send a package from Gaza to Japan, so I want you to be the recipient.")
(2) A few days after being contacted via social media by an individual claiming to be a female soldier of Japanese descent deployed by the United States to Gaza, a person claiming to be a medical professional contacted me and said, "The soldier has been caught up in the fighting and is unconscious and in critical condition. He has been taken to a hospital in Egypt (the medical institution that was provided is a real one) and is in need of immediate treatment." They then asked me to transfer funds for medical expenses.
2. In all of the above cases, it appears that the target person was contacted through a real-name registered SNS service (Facebook). In light of this, please be aware of the following points.
(1) We ask all users of these SNS services to be aware that the content they post may be viewed by an unspecified number of people, including those with the intention of misusing the content. If necessary, we ask that you consider reviewing the information you post and limiting the scope of information disclosure (such as limiting the scope of those who can view the information to only your friends).
(2) Try not to reply to messages that seem suspicious, and even if you do reply, take a firm stance and refrain from any further communication (set the other party's contact information, including SNS, to block calls and views). If you continue to communicate with them carelessly, you may be persuaded in any way possible to gain your trust.
(3) If you receive a request from a person you have never met, such as someone you met on social media, to transfer money, provide credit card information, or send the serial number of a gift card, regardless of the amount, first suspect the possibility of fraud and, as a general rule, do not respond. In many cases, it seems to be common for people to send images of their passport or ID card as identification documents in order to gain the trust of the person they are trying to deceive, but since the images are forged, they have no credibility whatsoever.
(4) These types of specialized frauds are often based not only on the conflict in the Gaza Strip, but also on incidents, accidents, and natural disasters that occur in other countries and regions and attract widespread attention, as well as international events such as the Olympics and the World Expo. (For example, you may be approached by someone posing as a banker asking you to inherit a huge inheritance from someone who died in a disaster, or you may be offered the opportunity to purchase tickets to an event in advance at a discount.) Please be careful of these types of fraud as well.
