[Second Report] Gunfire in Juba

Nov. 22, 2024, 11:41 p.m.
[Main text]
1. A fierce gun battle broke out in the Tomping area of Juba from around 7 p.m. on the 21st. According to reports, the gun battle was triggered by President Kiir's order to arrest General Akol.

2 The area is where General Akol's home is located. The general was dismissed as head of the NSS on suspicion of plotting a coup, and was ordered to voluntarily lay down his arms and was under house arrest. According to reports, the gunfight occurred around General Akol's home due to some kind of misunderstanding between the guards and the SSPDF, but the details are unclear.

3. At around 11:00 p.m. on the 21st, the gunfight stopped, and General Akol was reportedly arrested and transferred to military headquarters in Bilpam. Two SSPDF soldiers were wounded in the gunfight, and the SSPDF is continuing its investigation to identify civilian casualties. Although the situation appears to be coming under control, checkpoints, patrols and curfews are expected to be strengthened in and around Juba, and tensions are expected to rise.

4. We ask all Japanese nationals residing in Japan to make an effort to obtain the latest information and take safety measures such as refraining from unnecessary outings until safety is confirmed. We also ask that you prepare emergency supplies and secure stockpiles.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a risk information for South Sudan, calling for "Level 3: Do not travel (advisory to suspend travel)" for the capital Juba, and "Level 4: Evacuate. Do not travel (advisory to evacuate)" for other areas.
