Up until now, elections in Cameroon have been generally peaceful, but this time, depending on the situation, the possibility of sudden incidents such as riots cannot be denied. Therefore, those who are planning to travel or stay in Cameroon during the presidential election period or before and after it should make an effort to obtain the latest security information and take safety measures while keeping the following points in mind in order to avoid being caught up in unforeseen incidents.
- Do not approach places where election activities such as rallies and demonstrations are taking place, or election-related facilities such as polling stations.

Warning regarding attempted snatch theft of a Japanese national in Yaounde

July 16, 2025, 12:35 a.m.
At around 6:30pm on Wednesday, July 9th, four Japanese residents were waiting for a taxi on the street in Bastos district (near COZY POOL) in Yaoundé city, Centre Province, and one of them was using his mobile phone when a three-man motorcycle traveling in the opposite lane suddenly changed course and approached the Japanese residents. When the Japanese residents quickly put down their mobile phones, a man riding on the back seat (center) of the motorcycle put his hand on the waist pouch that the Japanese residents were carrying across their chest and pulled it, but was unable to take it and ran away. The Japanese residents were not injured.
Judging from the situation, it appears that the attacker was aiming for a mobile phone, and when he realized this was not possible, he tried to steal the bag. There have been many cases of snatch thefts using motorbikes in Yaoundé, and there have also been known to be cases where a knife was used to cut the straps of a bag worn across the victim's shoulder to steal it.
As countermeasures, if you are walking, try not to stand or walk too close to the road, do not handle mobile phones or other valuables on the street, do not carry your bag on the road side, and if a motorbike is approaching, look in its direction (make eye contact) and stay on guard. If you are traveling by car, as a general rule, do not open the window, and even if you have to open the window, take extreme care to prevent damage by placing your bag and valuables at your feet rather than on the passenger seat or other seat.
Furthermore, if you do encounter such a crime, please be aware that if you try to take it back by force, you may be subject to counterattacks, so please ensure your own safety, leave the scene as quickly as possible, and call the police, and take other appropriate action to protect yourself.
