Cholera outbreak in Luanda province (18th report)
May 5, 2025, 10:05 p.m.
1. The Ministry of Health of Angola updated the latest information on the cholera infection situation on May 4th, announcing that since the first case on January 7th, 17,967 cholera cases (1,865 more than last week) and 576 deaths (29 more than last week) have been reported. The infected areas are 17 provinces: Luanda, Ikoro i Bengo, Bengo, Benguela, Huambo, Huila, Malange, Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul, Zaire, Cunene, Cabinda, Uige, Cubango, Lunda Sul, Bie, and Namibe. Please continue to be careful in areas where infections have been confirmed.
2. The Ministry of Health, through the Luanda Provincial Health Service, continues to implement WHO-recommended cholera control measures (disinfection of affected areas, behavioral management of infected persons, testing of suspected cases, distribution of hypochlorous acid, etc.).
3. Cholera is transmitted by oral infection through food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria in the stool of a patient or carrier (if the patient has no symptoms). The incubation period ranges from a few hours to five days, and the disease is characterized by severe watery diarrhea (similar to rice water) and vomiting, and can be fatal if dehydration is not corrected. If you experience symptoms, we recommend that you immediately visit a medical institution.
4. Preventive measures (1) Be sure to take regular preventive measures against infectious diseases, such as washing your hands, using alcohol-based disinfectant (especially after using the toilet and before eating), and gargling.
(2) Avoid consuming tap water, ice, raw or undercooked seafood (shrimp, crab, sashimi, etc.), and raw vegetables.
(3) Avoid coming into contact with diarrhea or vomit, and if you do come into contact with them, be sure to wash your hands with soap and disinfect them with alcohol.
