Car theft incident against a Japanese national (resubmitted)

Aug. 13, 2025, 3:20 p.m.
A car break-in occurred near Laboutik Baba (a store) along the main road (St. Louis Rd) connecting the Victoria and Beau Vallon districts, resulting in partial damage to the vehicle of a Japanese national who was driving.

1. The summary of the incident is as follows:
(1) At around 14:40 on Saturday, August 9th, while a Japanese national was driving his private car from the Beau Vallon district to the Victoria district, he observed that the vehicle two cars ahead of him suddenly braked hard and started moving again near Laboutik Baba (a shop). Immediately afterwards, a suspicious individual (hereinafter referred to as the "suspicious individual") entered the vehicle in front of him from the left side of the road and made a gesture of attacking, stopping the vehicle. However, the suspicious individual returned to the shoulder of the road without doing anything, and the vehicle then moved away (was released).
(2) Although the Japanese national felt suspicious, he continued driving straight ahead as the road was one lane in each direction. However, the suspicious person pulled in front of the Japanese national's vehicle, stopped the vehicle, and came to the passenger side. The Japanese national tried to slowly leave the scene without causing any trouble. At that time, the suspicious person kicked the left side of the vehicle, but the Japanese national continued driving and escaped. Immediately after, he saw the suspicious person in his rearview mirror and ran away from the scene.
(3) The side mirror on the left side of the vehicle that was kicked was damaged, but fortunately there were no injuries to the Japanese nationals. The suspect was a thin man in his 20s, and although it is unknown whether he was carrying a weapon, he did not appear to be particularly drunk or under the influence of drugs.

2. Therefore, please take the following safety precautions when driving a vehicle.
When driving a vehicle, always check the situation in front, behind, left and right, and if you see any suspicious activity, do not approach the area. In a case like this, keep a sufficient distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, brake as you approach, and if you can leave the area, do so without coming to a complete stop. However, safety should always come first, and if there is a possibility of danger, do not recklessly drive or resist (if the other person is carrying a weapon, resisting may anger them and cause them to use their weapon).

3. If you are involved in an incident or accident, please file a police report and contact the Embassy with a summary of the incident.
