[Warning] Theft incidents occurring on domestic flights
Oct. 29, 2025, 9:40 p.m.
[Main text]
1. A Japanese national was the victim of the following theft while traveling on a domestic flight in Ethiopia.
(1) Date and time of the incident: Monday, October 27th, between 6:00 PM and 9:30 PM (2) Location: A certain regional airport in Japan (3) Summary of the incident: A few hours after the victim completed the boarding procedures and checked his luggage (unlocked backpack) at the check-in counter of the regional airport, he was called by an airport employee who told him to remove his cell phone from his checked baggage. After removing the cell phone from his baggage, the baggage inspection employee asked him for a tip. He removed his wallet from his baggage, handed over the tip, and returned the wallet to his baggage.
After arriving in Addis Ababa, the passenger noticed that his checked baggage was coming down the conveyor belt with the zipper open. Upon checking the contents, the passenger discovered that his wallet (containing two credit cards, approximately 13,000 yen in Japanese yen, and some Ethiopian birr in cash) had been stolen, with only the credit card remaining.
2. To avoid becoming a victim of crime
(1) We strongly recommend that you use lockable bags for checked baggage. If you are checking in a bag that cannot be locked, it is important to wrap it in a way that makes it difficult for a third party to open it.
(2) Please keep your valuables (cell phones, wallets, etc.) close to your body in a secure place such as a pouch, and keep them close to you at all times.
3. If you become a victim of a crime, please contact the following immediately.
