On the 8th, Prime Minister Nchemba said in a video message on Instagram that the government is asking all citizens to celebrate Tanzania's Independence Day on December 9th at home.
Security authorities are also urging people not to participate in or support protest demonstrations being called for on social media and other platforms.
We ask all Japanese nationals living in the country to be mindful of the increased surveillance of foreigners by security authorities, make an effort to obtain the latest news from media, and take special care to ensure your own safety by refraining from going out, especially on Independence Day on the 9th. Furthermore, if the situation worsens, there is a possibility that the internet may be cut off for a while. In that case, please be aware that this may cause problems with our ability to contact you in the future.
Regarding the situation in the country, our Embassy issued consular emails on November 27th and December 5th. On the 3rd, Tanzanian police issued a statement warning that calls for protest demonstrations on Tanzania's Independence Day are reminiscent of the violence and vandalism witnessed during the presidential election and pose a serious threat to public safety.The police also issued a statement saying that they are strengthening surveillance and preventive measures (security), citing the New Year's holiday period, and urged the public not to support the demonstrations.
On the 4th, police also called on people not to support influencers who are posting photos and videos online that incite protests. Police also reminded people that under Tanzanian law, sharing photos and videos that may cause unrest is a crime.
In response to calls for protests on Independence Day, the embassies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and other countries in Tanzania have issued warnings that people should prepare for potential unrest in the days leading up to and following the day, including possible unrest, a nationwide curfew, internet blackouts, the cancellation of ferries to Zanzibar, flight cancellations and the establishment of checkpoints with strict travel restrictions.
