[Warning] Impact of the light rainy season (December)
Nov. 25, 2024, 2:32 p.m.
To all residents and short-term visitors to Tanzania
Tanzania enters its minor rainy season in December. Although not as severe as the heavy rains in April, floods and landslides have been reported in various parts of the country (especially in the eastern and northern parts).
In the capital, Dar es Salaam, rain is causing roads to flood and create holes that do not look like puddles, which can cause cars to get stuck in holes, causing damage to wheels and suspension, or even causing collisions with cars trying to overtake, causing some considerable impacts. Please be very careful when driving.
Heavy rain also affects sanitation. In Tanzania, sewerage systems are not fully installed outside of some major cities. According to DAWASA (Tanzania Water Authority), only 10% of the population has sewerage facilities, and collected sewage is appropriately treated and discharged into the ocean, but most other houses and apartments use infiltration facilities built on their premises.
As a result, when heavy rains fall, rainwater cannot be drained away and wastewater backs up from houses' sewage systems, mixing with the rainwater and creating puddles.
In addition, many houses have a reservoir for drinking water built on the premises, and a motor is used to supply water from there to a black plastic tank located at a high place. If the reservoir is located at a low position, rainwater and sewage will flow into it, causing the water quality to deteriorate. The same is true for pools in apartment complexes and hotels, where water quality management is difficult.
Please be aware that contaminated water increases the risk of contracting diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and hepatitis A.
In addition, during rainy seasons, puddles are likely to form, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Please take adequate measures against mosquitoes, keeping in mind the possibility of contracting malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, etc.

[Warning] Important points to note regarding local elections in Tanzania
Nov. 25, 2024, 2:32 p.m.
To all Japanese nationals living in Tanzania and short-term visitors
Local elections are scheduled to take place across Tanzania, except Zanzibar, on Wednesday, November 27. There is a possibility of disturbances around polling stations, demonstrations, and police-guarded areas and surrounding areas.
In past local elections, there have been major disturbances between police crackdowns on irregularities and protesters, and clashes between police and demonstrators have also resulted in injuries.
We ask that everyone please avoid approaching polling stations, demonstrations or marches that take place around the time of the election, or other places where people gather.
If these are included in your commute route or planned destinations, please make arrangements in advance to use alternative routes.
If you are surrounded by demonstrators or crowds, you may be able to avoid them by taking refuge in a store or other area, moving closer to a police officer, or stopping your car and waiting for the demonstrators or crowd to pass before driving away. If you see a crowd or demonstration, please be careful not to approach them, as unrelated foreigners may be falsely accused or have their cars damaged as they pass by.
