[Security Information] Travel restrictions for areas bordering western Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Feb. 24, 2025, 7:21 p.m.
[Main text]
●The situation in the eastern part of neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo has been changing rapidly since late January this year. Anti-government armed groups (AFC: Alliance de la River de Congo, M23, etc.) have successively seized control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, and Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, and are reportedly aiming to move further south and invade Uvira in the same province.
●Uvira borders Bujumbura, the economic center of Burundi, by land route, and is only about 30 km from the center of Bujumbura. In the armed clashes near the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda so far, artillery fire and stray bullets have hit the bordering Rwanda side, causing many casualties and damage to houses. If anti-government armed forces invade Uvira, there is a possibility of damage on the Burundian side and confusion on the land border is expected, making the region a very dangerous situation. There are also reports that tens of thousands of refugees are already flowing from the Democratic Republic of Congo into Burundi.
●Since September 2022, the danger level for Cibitoke Province, Bubanza Province, and other areas in western Burundi bordering eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has been set at Level 3, and travel to these areas for any purpose is advised. In addition, the danger level for the whole of Burundi, including Bujumbura, is set at Level 2, and non-essential travel is advised.
●In the event of an emergency in Burundi, Japanese nationals will be able to receive assistance from the Belgian government's evacuation operations, so if you are currently staying in Burundi, regardless of the length of your stay, please register your emergency contact information with the Belgian Embassy in Burundi as soon as possible.
