Infectious disease information: Empox-related deaths and confirmation of Empox clade 1 cases

1. The announcements made by public health agencies are as follows:
(1) On March 20, Zambia's Minister of Health Elijah Muchima announced that the first Empox-related death in Zambia had been confirmed at Chipata Level 1 Hospital in Lusaka City, Lusaka Province. The deceased was an 8-month-old baby, and after a comprehensive death review meeting to determine the cause of death, it was determined that the baby's death was due to complications (pneumonia) during the course of Empox infection. The Zambian Ministry of Health stressed that in order to prevent further deaths, they are working to strengthen response capacity through training and mentorship programs for frontline medical workers.
(2) According to a report dated March 21st from the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 301 suspected cases of Empox infection have been reported in Zambia to date, of which 31 have been determined to be positive. Of the 31 positive cases, 21 have been confirmed to be clade 1b.
