Warning about general strikes (Banda)

Nov. 23, 2025, 3:15 a.m.
(Contents)
According to the police, pro-monarchist Hindus led by Durga Prasai are calling for a general strike (bandh) on Sunday, November 23rd in the capital Kathmandu and across Nepal.
In Kathmandu, approximately 1,500 pro-monarchy and Hindu supporters will gather in Balkhu and Koteshwar in the city from 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 23rd, to carry out a general strike (bandh), and it is said that this may also be carried out in other areas.

A bandh is an activity in which a political party calls on the public to go on strike in order to test the public's confidence in that party, and those who do not respond to the call are attacked, etc., to semi-force the strike. In past examples, this has been carried out particularly early in the morning, and passing vehicles have been attacked as a warning to others, in an attempt to force them to cooperate with the bandh.
In Banda, there is a possibility that traffic by cars and motorcycles may be disrupted at some intersections and major roads, and in the past there have been many cases of violent acts, such as arson attacks on vehicles.

We ask that Japanese residents and travelers in Japan refrain from going out, especially early in the morning, and avoid the above-mentioned protest sites, demonstrations, rallies, etc. as much as possible. We also ask that you stay up to date with the latest information from the media, make efforts to ensure your safety, and take sufficient precautions to avoid being caught up in any unforeseen incidents.
