[Resent] Beware of theft in homes and hotels

June 11, 2025, 8:30 a.m.
<Case 1>
At night, a Japanese national slept in a hotel with the front door unlocked, and someone broke in through the front door and stole his electronic devices and wallet. When he woke up the next morning, he realized that the above valuables were missing from his room.
<Case 2>
At night, a Japanese national was in his hotel room with the front door unlocked when he noticed a suspicious person entering the room without permission. The suspicious person left the room, but later he noticed that his wallet was missing, and it was discovered that the item had been stolen.
<Case 3>
When a Japanese tourist was shown to his hotel room, the hotel explained to him that the door lock was broken and would not close. However, he stayed in the same room without changing rooms, and when he went to sleep, someone broke into his room and stole his valuables, including his computer. It is possible that the hotel staff was in cahoots with the thief.

<Major crime prevention measures>
When staying at a hotel, choose a place with high security, where security guards are present (request a room on a higher floor, if possible).
(i) When you go out and when you go to sleep, be sure to lock windows, entrances, balcony doors, and other points that could be used as entry points for thieves, and keep your passport, airline tickets, cash, and other valuables in a safe place such as a safety deposit box.
If a stranger approaches you in a friendly manner, be extremely cautious and do not readily give out your name, room number or where you are staying, even if asked.
D) In the unlikely event that you allow a thief to break into your home, your top priority should be physical safety; as thieves are likely to be carrying knives or other sharp objects, avoid resistance and instead hand over any money or other items they request.

If you have been a victim of theft or have heard that someone you know has been a victim, please contact the Embassy immediately.
