Dengue fever warning (Update)

July 18, 2025, 6:45 a.m.
1 The Samoa Ministry of Health declared a dengue fever outbreak on Thursday, April 17th, and this declaration remains in effect. A total of 945 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Samoa since January this year, with 237 new cases confirmed in the week from June 30th to July 6th.
Most of the infections have been reported in urban and northwestern areas of Upolu Island, and while most patients have shown signs of improvement, the Samoan Ministry of Health is urging caution as there is still a risk of the illness becoming severe.

2 There is no vaccination or preventive medicine for dengue fever, so the best way to prevent it is to avoid mosquito bites. After an incubation period of 2-14 days (usually 3-7 days), symptoms include a fever of 38-40°C in about 20-40% of people, severe headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and a rash. Generally, symptoms are mild, but in some cases the condition can progress to a severe form called dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal, so caution is required.

3 Therefore, please take the following precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. If you experience any symptoms that may be due to dengue fever, such as a sudden fever (38-40 degrees), headache, or joint pain, we recommend that you seek medical attention as soon as possible.

When going outside, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce exposed skin, and apply insect repellent to exposed areas every 2 to 3 hours.
Even indoors, use electric mosquito repellents, mosquito coils, insecticides, mosquito nets, etc. effectively.
○ Build resistance by leading a regular life, getting enough sleep, and getting good nutrition.
If you suddenly experience high fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, or a rash, suspect dengue fever and seek medical attention immediately from a specialist.
* To prevent mosquito breeding, take measures such as not leaving tires, buckets, toys, pet food bowls, etc. outside and putting sand in water trays for plants.
