[Japanese victim] Theft victim in Centro, Buenos Aires (near the Obelisk)
April 29, 2025, 7:10 a.m.
[Main text]
An incident has occurred in which a Japanese national was the victim. We would like to inform you of the following:
1. Overview of the incident
(1) Date and time
Saturday, April 26, 2025, around 1:00 p.m.
(2) Location
Buenos Aires Centro (near the Obelisk, Corrientes Street)
(3) Victims and details of damage
Victim: Japanese male in his 30s Damage details: Bag containing valuables (passport, wallet, credit cards, camera)
(4) Status of the damage
The victim was walking along Corrientes Street near the Obelisk in Centro Buenos Aires at around 13:00 on April 26th when he was suddenly splashed with some kind of liquid from above. When he checked, he found that the liquid, which had a strong sewage-like odor, was on his clothes and luggage. When the victim tried to wipe his luggage, a man who appeared to be a local approached him and began helping him wipe the liquid.
While the victims were wiping their clothes and belongings, their belongings were switched by someone else, and by the time they noticed, the items had already been stolen. Another person also appeared at the scene, exaggerating the direction in which the perpetrator was believed to have fled.
2. Crime Prevention Measures
(1) This case is a type of crime known as the "ketchup robbery," which occurs frequently in Argentina. Usually, criminals are organized groups of several people who commit crimes in an organized manner, and in many cases, the roles are divided among three people: one who puts liquids such as ketchup, mustard or paint on the victim, one who approaches the victim kindly and wipes off the stains while attracting the victim's attention, and one who actually takes away (snatches) the victim's belongings, such as backpacks.
(2) In addition, as in this case, when the victim realizes that he or she has been victimized and tries to chase the perpetrator, a person may appear pointing in the direction the perpetrator is fleeing. However, in most cases, this person is also a member of the group and points in the opposite direction to the perpetrator, hindering the pursuit.
(3) In the unlikely event that you are splashed with any liquid, if you notice someone approaching you immediately, do not refuse help and move away from the scene. Also, never leave any valuables in your possession.
(4) Furthermore, to minimize the risk of theft, we recommend that you do not keep valuables such as your passport and mobile phone in the same bag, but rather distribute them among other bags, perhaps using a waist pouch or similar.
