Preventing ATM skimming
May 22, 2025, 6:45 a.m.
On the 20th, the Chapinero Police Station in Bogota arrested three members of a criminal organization on the spot for skimming ATMs. The perpetrators had installed some kind of device in the card reader of the ATM in advance and used skimming to extract the card information of ATM users.
2. ATM skimming methods used in Colombia include (1) installing an unauthorized reading device in the card reader part of the ATM, and (2) embedding a tiny camera disguised as a screw or other part of the ATM into the ATM, and relaying or recording card information such as PIN numbers via wired or wireless connections to a location where the criminal is located.
The following are recommended as crime prevention measures:
(1) Before using an ATM, check to see if there are any unnatural screws or other structures attached to the area or suspicious cords on the floor.
(2) When entering your PIN, cover the input area with your other hand to prevent it from being photographed. Also, make sure your card number and other details are not visible to others around you.
(3) Use ATMs that are in well-lit areas or trusted locations such as inside banks.
(4) Check your account balance frequently to see if there are any unauthorized withdrawals.
