[Warning] Please be careful of malaria infection.

April 17, 2025, 8:10 a.m.
On April 15, the Ministry of Health of Belize announced that malaria cases have been confirmed in the country for the first time in six years. Four cases have been confirmed since January. Three are community-acquired cases, located in the Santa Elena district of the town of San Ignacio Santa Elena in Cayo County, and in Cristo Rei village in the same county. The remaining case was reported by a person believed to have been infected in Petén, Guatemala.
Malaria is a febrile disease caused by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Infected people usually experience repeated episodes of fever accompanied by chills and sweats every 48 to 72 hours.
In response to this situation, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is going door-to-door in each community to conduct fever screenings, conduct mosquito control activities in areas where cases have been confirmed, and raise awareness among local residents about symptoms and prevention.

[Preventive measures]
Use insect repellent and mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites.
- Wear long sleeves and long trousers to prevent mosquito bites.
- Avoid puddles and wetlands, and do not create water areas where mosquitoes can breed (for example, leaving buckets of water unattended).

Please refer to the above preventive measures and take measures to prevent infection.

[Warning] Please be careful of measles

April 16, 2025, 5:15 a.m.
The first cases of measles in 34 years have been confirmed in Belize. Two unvaccinated young people who returned from Mexico in late March were infected during their trip and became ill on April 2 and 5, respectively.
As a result, the risk of measles infection is increasing within Belize, and people are urged to keep a close eye on their health and to seek medical attention as soon as possible if they develop symptoms.
In addition, since receiving the measles vaccine can reduce the risk of infection, people are actively encouraged to get vaccinated.
To reduce the risk of infection, please avoid crowded places as much as possible, gargle and wash your hands, and take other preventive measures such as wearing a mask if necessary.

At around noon on April 5th, 15 shots were fired at a black vehicle parked in the parking lot of a T&J store in Belmopan.
