Decreasing eruptive activity at Volcan de Fuego
June 7, 2025, 7 a.m.
At 12:30 on Friday the 6th, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) announced that "volcanic activity at Volcano Fuego is decreasing." According to reports, the closure of National Route 14 (RN14) has been lifted, and evacuated residents have begun returning home. Meanwhile, CONRED has issued the following warnings to the surrounding areas, urging continued vigilance.
- Pyroclastic materials (large and small rock fragments, volcanic ash, etc.) have accumulated upstream the valley, and rain may cause volcanic mudflows, so do not go near the valley.
- Stockpile a 72-hour supply of evacuation supplies.
- Check the latest information on CONRED and INSIVUMEH.
- Follow any instructions given by local government or other relevant authorities.
Volcanic mudflows (flows of debris mixed with water) contain a lot of water and move quickly, and can flow far down valleys, making it difficult to predict when and where they will occur. If you are caught up in them and swept away, there is a risk of death, so please continue to stay away from the area around the volcano.
If secondary disasters occur due to the rain, there is a high possibility of road congestion and traffic disruptions, so please refrain from unnecessary outings in the surrounding areas and act with caution to avoid being involved in accidents or crime.

Caution: Volcan de Fuego eruption
June 6, 2025, 2:40 a.m.
At around 5:00 a.m. on the 5th (Thursday), an eruption accompanied by pyroclastic flows and a large amount of ashfall occurred at Volcan de Fuego (Volcan de Fuego, located 18 km southwest of Antigua, spread across the three departments of Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla). The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) has issued a breaking news report stating that volcanic ashfall is expected to affect the nearby valleys as well as the western and northwestern regions.
As of 11:00 a.m., the eruption has affected the departments of Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, Escuintla, Solola, and Totonicapán. Residents living in mountainous areas and valleys have begun evacuating under the direction of the National Disaster Management Coordination Committee.
Police and military road closures have been implemented on the roads shown on the map below.

Pyroclastic flows are made up of gas, ash and chunks of rock that flow down the cliffs of a volcano at high speed and temperature. You should never go near the volcano as you may be burned or suffocated and die from the effects of these flows.
Roads are being closed and residents in the area are being evacuated. There is a high possibility of traffic congestion and traffic disruption on surrounding roads, including detours, so please refrain from unnecessary outings in the area and plan your travels more carefully to avoid becoming involved in accidents or crime.
