Warning: Robbery victimization of Japanese tourists
April 16, 2025, 7:40 a.m.
1. Summary of the incident On Sunday, April 12th at around 4pm, a robbery occurred in which a victim was robbed of all his belongings and sustained serious injuries.
Two Japanese tourists who had entered the country for tourism purposes got off at Cinco de Mayo Station and were walking to Casco Viejo when a man called out to them from behind and they stopped. They did not understand what he was saying and tried to go forward, but two more men came from the front, pinned them down and demanded that they hand over their bags. At that time, they were on a small path and could not call for help from other passersby. They shouted and resisted, but the perpetrator dragged them around and took all their belongings (cash, cell phone, passports).
2. Precautions We ask that tourists and Japanese residents in Japan use taxis and other means to travel in special alert areas and refrain from walking. Also, if you are the victim of a robbery, do not resist under any circumstances. Please be mindful of your surroundings when sightseeing or going out, and take steps to prevent becoming a victim of crime, so that you do not become the victim of a similar incident. We also ask that tourists register with Tabi-Regi.
