Beware of financial troubles

Nov. 13, 2024, 12:21 a.m.
<Details>
・In Athens (airport or downtown), a Greek man approaches a Japanese person while showing his ID card, and requests, "I want to talk to a Japanese person on the phone. I don't have any cash on hand right now, so please lend me some money (several dozen euros) for a mobile phone SIM card." After obtaining the SIM card, he repeatedly asks for financial assistance under new pretexts, such as, "I'll return the money, so please come with me to the bank. I need money (several hundred euros) to withdraw from the bank, so please lend it to me." In the end, the money is never returned.
・This case takes advantage of the kindness of solo travelers, and it will be difficult to recover the money that was lent. Even if a stranger approaches you and provides you with their ID and contact information, do not trust them easily, do not agree to financial assistance, and leave the scene. Please be careful to avoid similar troubles.

The Embassy is taking measures to raise awareness of safety measures in light of the occurrence of crimes against Japanese nationals. If you are a victim of crime, please report it to the police and also notify our Embassy.
