Earthquake alert around Santorini (February 17th)

1. According to the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and the Athens Observatory and Geodynamic Institute, there have been frequent earthquakes since the end of January in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos island to the northeast, and on February 17th a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred.
At this time, there have been no reports or announcements of any casualties due to the earthquake, but according to reports, landslides and collapses have occurred in the port of Athinios, where ferries to Athens depart from and arrive on the island of Santorini, and on the Kokini Paralia coast in the southwest.
2. According to reports, as a precautionary measure against earthquakes, daycare centers and schools will be closed until Friday, February 21 in Santorini, Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos. In addition, the city of Santorini has banned indoor events from being held until Friday, February 21.
3. The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection will continue to monitor the region and make announcements as necessary. The Ministry urges people to remain vigilant and to take the following measures:
- Avoid large indoor gatherings.
- Stay away from old vacant houses that are at risk of collapsing.
・Remove any items from buildings that could be dangerous in an earthquake, and remove water from swimming pools.
In the event of a major earthquake, move away from the coast immediately.
- Avoid rough terrain and areas prone to landslides and collapses in and around Santorini.
