Warning about bad weather
Nov. 13, 2024, 4:21 a.m.
1. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has maintained its severe weather warning since yesterday, the 11th.
2. On Wednesday the 13th, warnings of heavy rain, thunder, heavy snow and strong winds along the coast have been issued for the following 10 autonomous regions, including the Balearic Region, Catalonia and Valencia. In addition, heavy rain is expected to continue along the Mediterranean coast, with the possibility of very heavy rain in some areas.
Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Region, Cantabria, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Murcia, Valencia
3. On the following day, Thursday the 14th, the low pressure system is expected to move towards western Andalusia, causing heavy rainfall in the coastal areas of Valencia and Malaga, western Andalusia and around the Strait of Gibraltar.
4. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior recommends the following measures to take in the event of bad weather:
(1) Prepare for heavy rain and storms: If you are driving, slow down, move carefully, and do not stop in areas where there may be a large amount of water flowing.
If you need to travel, try to stay on major roads and expressways where possible.
In the event of a sudden storm or heavy rain, be careful where you park your car. A sudden rise in water levels can damage vehicles parked in flood-prone areas, as well as sweeping your vehicle away and causing damage to other people's property, or disrupting the natural flow of water.
If heavy rain starts falling, assume there is a risk of flooding. Do not drive or walk through flooded areas because you do not know what is below the water level. Instead, find the highest point near your location. Do not try to rescue your car from floodwaters.
If you are in a rural area, stay away from rivers, streams, hills and low-lying slopes and avoid wading through flooded shallow water. Head to the highest point in the area.
If you are caught in a thunderstorm, avoid running and stay on high ground such as hilltops, ridges, and watersheds. Do not seek shelter under trees and stay away from wire fences and metal objects.
(2) Measures against strong winds and coastal winds: Secure doors, windows, and all objects that may fall onto public roads, and avoid roof decorations, trees, walls, buildings under construction, cranes, and other objects that may collapse. Also, do not climb scaffolding that is not adequately protected.
・If you are driving, be particularly careful when going through tunnels, overtaking, or crossing large vehicles on two-way roads. Be aware of obstacles on the road.
If you are near the ocean, stay away from beaches and other low-lying areas that may be affected by storm surges and swells caused by strong winds, and do not park your car in a place where it may be affected by waves. In these conditions, the ocean may be in abnormal conditions and if you are near the ocean, you may be swept away by the waves. Do not risk your life by going near large waves.
5. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior also advises people to check regularly for the latest updates as weather events of this nature are difficult to predict.
