Dec. 9, 2024, midnight wide area information
During holiday and event seasons such as Christmas and New Year, there are increased gatherings and movements of people, which raises concerns that the possibility of terrorist attacks increases.
* In recent years, terrorist attacks have been occurring frequently in Europe and the United States, targeting places where security and surveillance are weak and where many ordinary citizens gather (soft targets). In particular, areas near tourist facilities, event venues, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, public transportation, religious facilities, etc. are prone to terrorist attacks, so caution is required at all times.

Safety measures during the New Year holidays
Dec. 10, 2024, 7:56 p.m.
1. Increase in theft of valuables, etc. There has been an increase in the number of victims of pickpocketing and other crimes in Italy, including in the area under the jurisdiction of our embassy. These crimes are occurring not only among short-term travelers but also among Japanese nationals residing in Italy, so please be careful.
Please refer to the "Safety Guide" on our website for safety measures.
https://www.milano.it.emb-japan.go.jp/files/100010829.pdf
2. New Year's Closures - The Consulate-General of Japan will be closed, including the consular counters, from December 25th (Wed), 26th (Thu), and 28th (Sat), 2024, to January 6th (Mon), 2025. Please note that during this period, consular services such as the issuance of passports, travel documents for returning home, and certificates will be suspended.
・For Japanese nationals residing overseas, please check the location and expiration date of your passport, and apply early if necessary. Also, if you need proof of identity, please apply well in advance, as applications submitted just before the consulate's closing day may not be in time.
・In addition, travelers, if your passport is lost or stolen, you will not be able to complete the necessary procedures and will have to extend your period of stay or change your flight, which may result in financial burdens and impacts on your work, etc., so we ask you to take sufficient care of your passport and valuables (see also information in 1 above).
3. Safety measures for large-scale events, etc. - From Tuesday, December 24, 2024 to Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the year of the Giubileo, the Catholic Holy Year, will see many events held at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City as the main venue. During this period, Catholics from all over the world are expected to visit Rome and stop off in other cities in Italy.
・Places where people gather, including the events listed above, are more likely to become targets of terrorism and are also more likely to become the victim of pickpocketing, etc. Please pay attention to your surroundings, such as trying not to stay in crowded places for too long, and leave the area if necessary, to ensure your own safety and act with caution.
4. Transport-related strikes in December According to information released by the Italian government and reports, a strike is planned for public transport (trains, taxis, buses, local public transport such as subways, and ships) across Italy on Friday the 13th, with strikes in the aviation and logistics industries also planned around the same time. If these strikes go ahead as planned, it is highly likely that they will affect not only Japanese nationals residing in Italy, but also those planning to travel or go on business trips, etc. Therefore, please make sure to allow yourself plenty of time when travelling, and make an effort to gather information from reports and the websites of the airlines and railway companies you plan to use as needed.
