People traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its neighboring countries, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, the Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic, where there have been many cases of Empox clade 1 recently, should be particularly careful to prevent infection. Important Notice Regarding the Centralized Production of Passports "2025 Passports"
Sept. 25, 2024, 9:31 p.m.
1. Changes to passport specifications and increase in the number of days required from application to issuance (1) From March 24, 2025, we plan to start issuing "2025 passports" that use a plastic base material for the personal information page in order to strengthen measures against counterfeiting of passports.
(2) Currently, it takes approximately seven working days from application to issuance of a passport. However, from March 24 next year, passports will be produced in Japan and delivered to the Embassy, and the process will take at least two weeks.
(3) As we will provide further details on our website and elsewhere, it will take longer to issue passports than it does now. Therefore, we ask that you take this opportunity to carefully check the expiration date of your current passport and consider applying for a new passport as soon as possible (you can apply for a passport renewal if there is less than one year left on your passport).
(4) Regarding the specific date of issuance, we will inform you of the expected date (approximate) at the time of application. However, we will contact you again with the specific date of issuance when the preparations for issuance are complete (if you apply in person at the counter, we will contact you by phone, and if you apply online on ORR Net, we will send an email to the registered email address).
2. Termination of the Provisional Acceptance Service (Application by Mail) (1) Until now, for those who live far from the Consulate-General of Japan, we have offered a service in which you could submit a passport application form by mail in advance and have your passport issued on the date of your reservation, on the condition that you would receive your passport on the day of our on-site consular service or on a date that you had previously agreed upon.
(2) However, as the centralized issuance of passports will make it difficult to accommodate such requests, the service of issuing passports on the day of a consular service visit or on the day of a visit based on a prior application by mail will be discontinued from March 24, 2025.
(3) For this reason, if you live in a remote area or would like to receive your card in person, please consider using the online application method. If you apply online, you will only need to visit the office when you receive your card. Please check the link below for instructions on how to use the electronic application method.
https://www.ch.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/11_000001_01033.html
(4) If you live far away and wish to collect your passport through a consular service, please apply online and allow plenty of time for your passport to be processed.
