Beware of scams!! (Scams using the Road Transport Authority (RTA) QR code, etc.)

April 14, 2025, 5:55 p.m.
Below are some of the scam methods recently confirmed in the area. Please also review past warnings from our Embassy (see 3 below), understand that various types of scams are rampant in the area, and continue to be vigilant against scams to avoid becoming a victim.

1. Scams exploiting Road Transport Authority (RTA) QR codes Scams exploiting RTA QR codes installed at metro stations and bus stops, public car parks managed by RTA, and RTA customer centers are rampant. Fraudsters paste fake QR codes on top of the legitimate QR codes installed at these facilities to lead victims to fraudulent websites disguised as legitimate RTA websites, where they attempt to steal personal information and bank account information, or to defraud victims of their money.
Please be aware that this type of scam is widespread, and take steps to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of scams by not scanning any QR codes that look suspicious, such as those that appear to have been pasted in later, and by comparing the URL of the website you are redirected to after scanning a QR code with the URL of a legitimate website to see if there are any suspicious points.

2. Scams impersonating Embassy staff The Embassy has received inquiries from people who have been approached by scammers who have been scammed into sending messages disguised as messages from Embassy staff. Fraudsters use the names and photos of Embassy staff to trick people into believing that the emails are from Embassy staff, in order to defraud them of money.
Our staff will never solicit money from you for business or transactions, so please contact us immediately if you receive any suspicious communication of this nature.

3. Our Embassy website (safety information)
The Embassy's website (Safety Information) listed below provides basic information on local safety measures, information on how to prevent fraud, and other points of caution you should be aware of during your stay in the area.
With the new fiscal year upon us, if you have people around you who are starting new lives in the area, please refer them to the following website and urge them to take safety measures in the area.
