Travel advisories from local embassies and consulates

Information from the past two weeks.

Caution for those staying in Siem Reap, including those visiting the Angkor Wat

July 26, 2024, 8:06 p.m.
1. Preparation before traveling (1) Requirements for entering Cambodia A. Passport validity must be at least 6 months B. Cambodian visa is required (2) Online immigration, customs and quarantine procedures upon arrival in Cambodia (Extension of trial operation period)
For information on the status of the introduction of e-Arrival Procedures, please check the information posted on the website of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia. https://www.kh.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/b_000969.html
(3) Purchasing overseas travel insurance. When using insurance included with your credit card, regulations may change and there may be cases where insurance does not apply, so we recommend that you check before you leave.

2. Points to note after arrival (during your stay) (1) Traffic accidents A. In Cambodia, people have a lower awareness of traffic laws than in Japan, and speeding, driving in the opposite lane, running into lanes, drunk driving, ignoring traffic signals, and riding motorcycles on sidewalks are commonplace, resulting in many traffic accidents. In particular, many accidents occur when foreign tourists are riding bicycles or motorcycles. Recently, a Japanese tourist was seriously injured when he was hit from behind by a Cambodian car while riding in a bicycle lane near the Angkor Wat ruins. In addition, there have been cases of tourists and Japanese residents being injured in rollover and rear-end collisions when using tuk-tuks, and there have also been cases of tourists being hit by motorcycles while walking in tourist areas and urban areas. With these things in mind, please be careful when driving, riding, or walking in various situations to avoid traffic accidents.
In the unlikely event that you are involved in a traffic accident and suffer an injury requiring urgent medical treatment, if medical institutions in Cambodia are unable to provide treatment, you may need to be transported to a neighboring country or Japan, which will require a large amount of money. Even in this case, we strongly recommend that you take out insurance that covers the transportation costs.
(2) Health Management If you have a chronic illness, please consult with a doctor before traveling to discuss the risks associated with overseas travel and the medications you should take with you. In case of an emergency, please bring extra medication with you. We recommend that you have a doctor prepare a simple medical certificate in English and a list of the medications you are taking, and carry them with you.
Please refer to the Cambodian medical information page, which lists common illnesses and injuries, as well as information on medical institutions. https://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/toko/medi/asia/cambodia.html
(3) Natural Disasters The rainy season has arrived in the area, and this year there has been a lot of damage caused by strong winds and lightning strikes. Recently, in the Angkor Wat area, strong winds caused an old tree to fall, resulting in the deaths and injuries of tourists. If you notice any signs of an approaching cumulonimbus cloud, such as the sky suddenly turning dark, heavy rain starting to fall, or the sound of thunder, please take action to ensure your own safety, such as taking shelter in a sturdy building.
(4) Managing your passport If you lose your passport, you may be forced to change your return date. Please take care to manage your passport carefully during your stay and avoid losing it. If you lose your passport, first check your baggage carefully. Also, check with the accommodation where you stayed and the last facility where you presented your passport to see if you left it behind.
For detailed procedures in case of lost or stolen passports, please refer to the website of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia: https://www.kh.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/passport_lost.html
