Caution during the New Year holidays (Consulate-General of Japan in Perth)

[Main text]
1. General safety measures against crimes, etc.
In general, public safety overseas is not as good as in Japan, and there is a possibility that you may get into some kind of trouble, and many travelers have actually fallen victim to this. Please be aware that many aspects of the legal system, culture, customs, and habits are different from those in Japan, and take great care.
If you are involved in an incident or accident, follow the instructions of the local police, evacuate to a safe place, and then report it to the local Japanese embassy or consulate-general.

(1) Basic crime prevention measures
○ Do not carry large amounts of cash or valuables.
○ Do not exchange or change large amounts of money at airports or city exchange offices.
○ Try to act inconspicuously.
○ Avoid walking alone in areas with little foot traffic or at night.
- Do not accept invitations from strangers. (You may become a victim of gambling fraud or being ripped off. Be careful of clever tactics that will reassure you by speaking to you in Japanese or telling you that you know a Japanese person.)
○ Avoid excessive drinking.
○ Prioritize the safety of your life and body. If you are robbed, assume that the robber is armed and do not resist.

(2) Caution regarding narcotics and other illegal drug crimes
In many countries and regions, the crackdown on illegal drug crimes such as narcotics has been strengthened, and in some cases foreigners are subject to the death penalty or life imprisonment. In addition, there is a possibility that you may be used as a "mule" without realizing it, so if you receive a request from someone you don't know well, such as "Please bring a souvenir for Mr. XX," be sure to clearly refuse.

(3) Management and carrying of passports
Please be careful not to lose or have your passport stolen.
If your passport is lost or stolen, you should immediately go to the local police and file a loss or damage report, obtain a copy of either or a certificate of loss or damage, and contact the consular section of a Japanese Embassy or Consulate-General.

(4) Overseas travel insurance
If you get sick or injured, you may not be able to receive the necessary medical treatment in your country, and you may need to be transported to another country or to Japan. Furthermore, if you do not have insurance, you may have to pay all of the expensive medical and transportation costs yourself, which can sometimes amount to tens of millions of yen. Even this year, there have been cases where people have had to pay high medical expenses out of their own pocket, so we recommend that you purchase overseas travel insurance with sufficient coverage.

(5) Fatal Shark Attack Incidents
In Western Australia, a fatal shark attack occurred in February last year (near the mouth of the Swan River), and Japanese tourists have also been attacked by sharks. If you are planning to go surfing, diving or other sea activities in the area, please keep these incidents in mind and take great care by obtaining the latest information from local authorities. You can check the shark sighting situation from the link below.

(6) Collecting wild plants and animals is illegal.
In Australia, collecting and taking out of the country most wild animals and plants, including lizards and frogs, is prohibited, and if you are found guilty of violating this rule, you will be subject to severe penalties, including imprisonment. Please be careful not to do such things.

(7) Prepare for bushfires Bushfires occur widely throughout Western Australia (including the suburbs of Perth) every summer. Please be cautious and take action if hot and dry weather continues.
For the latest bushfire and disaster information please see the links below.

(8) Warning about special frauds Special frauds are occurring overseas as well. There have been confirmed cases of fraudsters impersonating Japanese government officials, so please be careful. Japanese public institutions will never request remittances without going through the proper procedures. Please take precautions such as not easily responding to suspicious phone calls, emails, SNS, etc. that you do not recognize. For more information, please see the link below.

2. Safety measures against infectious diseases
There are many infectious diseases overseas that are unfamiliar to Japan, so please check the Overseas Safety Website for information on infectious diseases for your destination.
Please also refer to information from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' quarantine guidelines.

3. Start of issuance of 2025 passports From March 24, 2025, we will start issuing "2025 passports" using a plastic base material for the personal information page in order to strengthen measures against counterfeiting. Currently, passports are produced at the Consulate General of Japan in Perth, but with the start of issuance of "2025 passports", passports will be produced in a concentrated manner at the National Printing Bureau. As a result, it will take longer than before from application to issuance, so if you have a short remaining passport expiry date, please consider applying for a passport as soon as possible. Depending on your destination, a validity period of 3 to 6 months or more may be required. As a general rule, if the remaining expiry date is less than one year, you can apply for renewal (switching application). For details, please check the link below.
