Wildfire Warning for Southern California and Arizona

Aug. 9, 2025, 8:50 a.m.
1. In Southern California, multiple wildfires are occurring, including the Gifford Fire (San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County) and the Canyon Fire (Los Angeles County and Ventura County), and firefighting efforts are currently underway. Evacuation orders and advisories have been issued for surrounding areas, and public access is prohibited. In Arizona, multiple wildfires are occurring, including the Dragon Bravo Fire in Grand Canyon National Park, and firefighting efforts are underway.

2. As the dry weather in Southern California and Arizona continues to make conditions more susceptible to wildfires, please be aware of the following:
(1) Prepare for disasters by making an effort to obtain the latest information from daily news reports and local governments.
(2) When going out, check traffic information and the situation around your destination before leaving, as roads may be closed due to wildfires.
(3) Do not approach areas where wildfires are occurring out of curiosity.
(4) Be careful when handling fire outdoors.
(5) In preparation for evacuation, check and prepare disaster essentials, including your passport, and keep them ready to take with you at any time.
(Reference: A checklist of essential disaster supplies is included at the end of the "Safety Guide" created by our Embassy.) https://www.la.us.emb-japan.go.jp/pdf/AnzenTebiki2024.pdf

3. Wildfires also produce air pollution due to smoke. Even if you are far from the wildfire site, smoke can spread far and wide depending on the wind direction, and air pollution can have adverse health effects. Elderly people, young people, and people with respiratory diseases in particular should refrain from outdoor activities if they notice smoke or smell it. If you have no choice but to be outdoors, please wear a mask.

[Warning] Safety measures during the summer vacation period

Aug. 5, 2025, 2:10 p.m.
1. Theft and Robbery Many tourists visit Guam during the summer vacation and Obon holidays, so be careful of thefts targeting tourists, such as robbery, snatching, purse snatching, and car theft. There have been particularly many car thefts in parking lots at tourist spots and purse snatching on beaches. Please take steps to prevent theft by keeping valuables such as wallets and bags close to you at all times and not leaving anything in your vehicle when you leave it.
Also, stay away from dark places and deserted alleys, where you may be the victim of crimes such as robbery or snatch theft. If you are attacked by a robber, do not resist under any circumstances and try to protect your own life.

2. Preventing loss of passport If you lose your passport, it will take a considerable amount of time to report it to the Guam Police Department, have your photo taken, and go through the process of issuing a "return document (fees apply)," which could prevent you from returning home as planned.
During your stay in Guam, please store your passport properly, such as in a hotel safe. There have also been many cases of passports being lost when people have put their passports in their bags and then taken out of their belongings. When carrying your passport, please take measures to prevent it from being lost, such as storing it in a zippered pocket in your bag.

3. Prevention of water accidents This year, there have been water accidents in which Japanese tourists visiting the area drowned while swimming in the sea. Please ensure your personal safety by wearing a life jacket when swimming in the sea, not going to deep waters, and not entering the sea when the waves are high.
Additionally, there have been cases of injuries caused by marine creatures such as jellyfish and stonefish in the past, and there is also glass shards scattered on the beach, so be sure to wear marine shoes when swimming.

4. Rental Car Troubles There have been several cases of people being billed for repairs they didn't make, or being denied rental car insurance, after renting a car. When renting a car, avoid extremely cheap rental car companies, always check the contract terms and insurance coverage before signing the contract, and take photos of the inside, outside, and underside of the car before and after using it to prevent any problems.

5. Purchasing overseas travel insurance Medical expenses in Guam are extremely expensive. In the past, there have been cases of Japanese travelers being billed for medical expenses ranging from hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of yen. In addition, travel insurance provided with credit cards may not be sufficient, so we strongly recommend purchasing cashless overseas travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation costs before departing the country.

Please see below for details on safety measures in Guam.

Aug. 1, 2025, 5:50 a.m.

2. We ask that all Japanese nationals residing abroad take the necessary steps to ensure safety by obtaining the latest weather information through announcements from each state, local weather forecasts, and breaking news broadcasts on the radio. In addition, when going out or traveling, please take sufficient caution as impacts to public transportation and infrastructure are expected, and there is a risk of injuries from falls, accidents due to sudden water rises and flooding, and when traveling by car, accidents due to flooded roads and downed power lines.

3. If you are caught up in any disaster or come across information about Japanese nationals being affected, please contact our Consulate-General.
