Overseas Safety Measures Information (Fourth Quarter of FY2024 (January-March))

April 23, 2025, 4:45 p.m.
1. Social and security situation, etc. "Terrorism situation in the deep south of Thailand"
During this quarter, in Thailand's far south (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla provinces), there were an average of approximately 17 terrorist attacks per month using firearms and explosives suspected to be linked to Islamic militant groups.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a risk information of "Level 3: Do not travel (recommended travel cancellation)" for Yala Province, Pattani Province, Narathiwat Province, and parts of Songkhla Province (Jana, Thepa, and Sabayoi districts). Please refrain from traveling to these areas for any purpose. Please note that a risk information of "Level 2: Do not travel non-essentially" has been issued for the other districts of Songkhla Province.

2. Crime Trends (1) Crime Trends There were 38 reported cases of crimes committed by Japanese nationals during the fourth quarter of FY2024. This is a decrease of 16 cases compared to the previous quarter. The most common type of crime was pickpocketing, followed by fraud (fake money fraud, etc.).
(2) Case files of Japanese nationals
During the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024, 15 Japanese nationals were arrested by Thai police for crimes including violations of the Immigration Control Act, and 13 Japanese nationals were forced to leave the country.
(3) Other precautions [Caution regarding security in border areas]
● In recent years, there have been cases of foreigners who were offered favorable conditions, such as high wages, through social media, etc., traveling to Thailand and then being forced to work illegally in Tachileik City in Shan State and Myawaddy City in Karen State, both on the Myanmar side of the border with Thailand.
● Since the coup that took place in February 2021, these border areas on the Myanmar side have been effectively controlled by ethnic armed groups, and due to the worsening security situation, they are beyond the reach of the current Myanmar "government." In addition, as fighting has intensified in the surrounding areas, you may be caught up in danger in addition to criminal activities. Therefore, if you become a victim of a crime in these areas, it may not be easy for security authorities to rescue or resolve the situation, and the Japanese Embassy may not be able to provide prompt and sufficient assistance.
● Therefore, if you receive job information through social media or other means that promises high salaries, please be sure to understand the above situation and be careful not to be deceived.

○Caution regarding special fraud cases (to avoid becoming a perpetrator)

[Increase in the number of thefts caused by talking to others]
● Regarding the sudden increase in complaints of victims of the so-called "show me your money scam," in Bangkok there has been a steady stream of complaints of victims of the so-called "show me your money scam," in which men (or men and women) claiming to be from Dubai approach people and ask to see their banknotes, and then steal their cash or credit cards during the transaction. We continue to receive a large number of complaints of this type of scam.
● Regarding the theft of credit cards: In Bangkok and surrounding areas, there have been multiple reports of foreign women being approached and asked, "Where did you buy that hat?" and then invited to a restaurant, where they would say, "I want to design a bag to give as a gift," and then have their bag taken from them under the pretext of checking the size, and their credit cards stolen during the interaction.
If you are approached by a stranger as described above, please ignore them and leave the situation as quickly as possible.

[Caution regarding lost or stolen passports]
We have received many inquiries regarding lost or stolen passports. The number of inquiries received during this period was 84 (30 of which were thefts), and remains at a high level.
Please take care to store your passport in the same way as any other valuable, and take steps to prevent it from being lost or stolen by not casually placing it in an outer pocket of a backpack where it could be easily taken out by a third party. When in crowded places such as on trains, in busy areas, or at event venues, try to carry your bag in front of your body.
