Travel advisories from local embassies and consulates

Information from the past two weeks.

(Warning) Regarding the outbreak of dengue fever, etc. in the area

Sept. 13, 2024, 6:41 a.m.
[Symptoms and prevention of dengue fever]
1: The incubation period for dengue fever is 3 to 7 days, and symptoms include fever (lasting for 5 to 7 days), headache, joint pain, and skin rash. Symptoms such as muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may also be seen. Dengue fever can become severe around the 7th day after onset, so it is necessary to carefully monitor the progress even after being diagnosed with dengue fever.
2: There is still no cure for dengue fever, and treatment is generally given to alleviate each symptom. Most people recover naturally, but if the disease progresses to severe dengue, there is a possibility of death if proper treatment is not received. If the progress after fever is not good, it is important not to hesitate to visit a medical institution. It is known that people who have been infected with dengue fever in the past are at higher risk of developing severe symptoms if they are infected with dengue fever again.
3: There is no specific cure for dengue fever, so prevention is extremely important. It is transmitted by mosquito bites, so be careful to wear long sleeves and long pants after the evening, use mosquito repellents (insect repellent sprays, etc.), and use screens on your windowsill. If there are any places around your home where water may accumulate (buckets, old tires, etc.), remove them to prevent mosquito breeding.
4: There are facilities in Brazil where you can get vaccinated. (As of September 12, the Brazilian government has limited the target age group to 10-14 years old. This may change at any time.) For details, please contact a nearby vaccination site.

4. Request from the Consulate-General of Japan Please avoid visiting risk areas where incidents have already occurred and stay up to date with the latest information through the news, etc.
If you are involved in a similar incident, here's what to do:
・If you hear gunfire nearby, immediately "lie down" (standing up increases your vulnerability to gunfire and your risk of being hit). Also, wait for an opportunity to retreat while ensuring your safety.
・If you hear gunfire in the distance or are able to move, run away from the scene. Remain calm and evacuate to a safe place.
・If you cannot "escape," then "hide." Place obstacles on the path between you and the perpetrator, and lie down to ensure your own safety.
