Safety measures during the New Year holidays

Dec. 28, 2024, 1:51 a.m.
As people tend to go out more during the New Year holidays, there is a tendency for the number of robberies, thefts (pickpocketing, snatching, burglary, car break-ins, etc.) and traffic accidents to increase. When you go out, please be careful and keep the following in mind.

(1) Robbery There have been cases of robbery aimed at stealing sales money from buses, taxis, supermarkets, small shops, etc., targeting customers of banks and currency exchange offices, as well as break-in robberies into private homes. Please be careful when going out with large amounts of cash or expensive items.
(2) Pickpocketing Most pickpocketing occurs in crowded places such as on buses, shopping centers, and markets. Pickpocketing is usually done by a pair of pickpockets, one of whom distracts the victim by asking for time while the other steals valuables (wallet, cash, etc.) from the victim's bag or pocket. Please be aware of your surroundings and be wary of people who approach you unnecessarily.
(3) Snatch thefts can occur anywhere and at any time, and are particularly common among those who are involved in crimes committed by duo's on motorcycles. Please avoid walking alone at night, or on roads with little traffic even during the day.
(4) Burglary If you are going to be away from home for an extended period of time, such as on a trip, do not tell anyone except people you trust. It is also wise not to tell security guards the exact period of your absence. If you have someone you trust who can check on the house while you are away, asking them to do so is also a crime prevention measure.
In addition, please refrain from posting on social networks or other platforms that reveal details of your actions, such as "I'm going on a trip," "I'm currently traveling," or "When will I be back?"
(5) Car break-ins: Items left inside parked cars are the main targets, but there have also been cases of gasoline, car parts, and in some cases, the vehicle itself being stolen. Avoid parking on the street as much as possible and use designated parking lots with guards. If you have to park on the street, make sure not to leave valuables inside the car.
(6) Traffic Accidents The traffic environment is very poor, with most accidents being caused by speeding. Many accidents occur in the departments of Montevideo and Canelones, as well as on the national highways connecting the two departments.
